Oxalate deposition in tissues.

چکیده
An 11-year-old boy was found to have primary hyperoxaluria type I (urine oxalate 828mg/l, N 140–420mg/l). His mother had kidney stones and the parents were second degree relatives. After 18 months of dialysis, femoral neck fracture occurred, which was assumed to be related to renal osteodystrophy. During the surgical procedure to fix the fracture site internally, biopsies were taken which showed fibrosis and histiocytic reaction with multinucleated foreign body macrophages (Figure 1). Under polarized light microscopy birefringent oxalate crystals were detected (Figure 2). In oxalosis, oxalate deposits are mainly found in the heart and in smooth muscle cells of vessels and other organs [1,2]. Bone involvement in our patient presumably started in the rich vascular network of the bone marrow and finally, with a component of renal osteodystrophy, led to a pathological fracture. Severe oxalate bone disease appears to be the

Plasma oxalic acid and calcium levels in oxalate poisoning.
Observations are reported on five cases of suicide or attempted suicide by poisoning with oxalic acid or ethylene glycol. Elevated oxalic acid levels were observed in the plasma, stomach contents, and a number of tissues. Raised oxalic acid levels in plasma were associated with reduced total and ultrafilterable calcium levels. It is suggested that the reduction in plasma total calcium level is ...

Backgroundand Objective:During the holy month of Ramadan, the number of admissions of patients with renal colic increases. This study was conducted to investigate the effects deprivation of food and water on the urinary crystals formation in the kidneys of rats as an experimental model of Ramadan-type fasting (RTF). Subjects and Method...
متن کاملCrystals in brain and meninges in primary hyperoxaluria and oxalosis.
A case of primary hyperoxaluria and oxalosis with chronic renal failure, crystalline myocarditis, and disseminated calcium oxalate crystal deposition in various tissues including the brain and meninges is described. Deposition of crystals in brain and meninges is exceptionally rare in primary oxalosis.

The deposition of calcium oxalate crystals in human tissues was first described by Lepoutre (1925), who found these in the kidney of a child aged 41 years who also had multiple urethral, ureteric, and bilateral renal calculi. Similar deposits have been described in the kidneys and elsewhere by other authors. Ying Chou and Donohue (1952) suggested the term " oxalosis " to describe the condition ...
متن کاملCardioembolic stroke in primary oxalosis with cardiac involvement.
Primary oxalosis is a rare disorder of oxalate metabolism, characterized by nephrocalcinosis, nephrolithiasis, and extrarenal deposition of calcium oxalate in several tissues, including the heart. We report the case of a 34-year-old man with sudden right hemiparesis and aphasia from the occlusion of the left middle cerebral artery. Clinical features and the results of laboratory investigations ...
